Copernicus Publications is deeply saddened by the news of the untimely and sudden death of Prof Astrid Kiendler-Scharr. Not only has she been an active and outspoken editor for one of our most influential journals, Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, she was also a vocal supporter of Copernicus Publications and our publishing philosophy in general. We had the privilege of working closely with her in the past couple of months on a project she put much effort in, the new Diamond Open-Access Journal Aerosol Research. Nearly 100 researchers from 70 institutions across 18 nations have – for the 10th consecutive year – synthesized global and regional measurements, national statistics, and model outcomes to submit an updated Global Carbon Budget 2021 to the Earth System Science Data journal.

The prominent Copernicus journal Earth System Science Data (ESSD) is seeking a chief science editor. To help authors know the article processing charges (APCs) levied for their final journal article already from submission, the EGU and Copernicus test a per-paper APC model for manuscripts submitted to CP and GMD from 1 January 2021.

As of 1 November 2020 the direct settlement of article processing charges (APCs) between the ETH Zurich and Copernicus Publications will be valid for corresponding authors.

The signatories of this position statement believe that OA that is delivered in a full, immediate and transparent (FIT) way by fully OA publishers offers a high-quality, cost-effective alternative to hybrid models.

The 5th principle of Plan S states that "When Open Access publication fees are applied, they must be commensurate with the publication services delivered and the structure of such fees must be transparent to inform the market (...)". In order to embrace transparency, Copernicus published its APC breakdown (averaged amongst all its journals). Thereby, we applied the scheme suggested by the FAIR Open Access Alliance (FOAA).

The Copernicus Medal 2020 has been awarded to Justin C. Kasper for his pioneering work on the heating and acceleration of the solar corona and the solar wind, and his outstanding leadership of the SWEAP Investigation on Parker Solar Probe which has now successfully touched the Sun.

At the end of 2019, Copernicus became a supporting member of Open Knowledge Maps (OKM). OKM is the world's largest visual search engine for scientific knowledge. It is building a visual interface that dramatically increases the visibility of research findings for science and society alike. By being a supporting member, we are very happy to contribute to sustain this non-profit organization and its valuable work.

The Spanish National Research Council (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC) will now provide a publication fund for their corresponding authors publishing in Copernicus' open-access journals.

In 2016, the 17 EGU–Copernicus peer-reviewed open-access journals experienced significant growth. We published over 3300 final-revised papers, corresponding to some 53,500 pages, a growth of about 10% compared to the previous year. These papers were downloaded over 645,000 times.

Since October 2015, authors who publish their article in one of Copernicus' open-access journals have been able to host their supplementary videos and video abstracts in the TIB AV-Portal.
